About Kambo

About Kambô Whether you're discovering Kambô for the first time or looking to deepen your understanding, this section offers a comprehensive introduction to this remarkable Amazonian secretion. Here you'll find information about what Kambô is, how it works, what to expect during a ceremony, how to prepare, contraindications, frequently asked questions, and other practical guidance to help you feel informed, confident, and well prepared for your journey.

General Information

Kambô is a secretion from the Phyllomedusa Bicolor, a tree frog found in the Amazon rainforest. Often referred to as “Sapo,” “Kampu,” or “vaccina da floresta” (vaccine of the forest).

Kambo is applied to small burns (gates) on the skin, allowing the body to absorb the peptides in the secretion. This triggers a deep cleansing process, including purging and detoxification.

For generations, Indigenous peoples of the Amazon have worked with Kambô to promote strength, resilience, and wellbeing. Today, people seek Kambô for many different reasons, including physical health, emotional release, personal growth, and a deeper connection with themselves.

Kambô is perhaps best known for its intense cleansing process and its unique cocktail of naturally occurring bioactive peptides. These compounds have attracted growing scientific interest because of their diverse biological activities and their potential to influence a range of physiological processes. Alongside centuries of traditional use, this has contributed to Kambô’s reputation as one of the Amazon’s most remarkable natural medicines.

While everyone’s experience is unique, many people report feeling lighter, clearer, more energised, emotionally balanced, and more resilient following a ceremony. Others seek Kambô as part of their journey to support recovery, improve wellbeing, or release patterns that no longer serve them.

Beyond its physical effects, many describe Kambô as a deeply transformative experience that invites self-reflection, greater awareness, and a renewed sense of connection with themselves and the natural world. Rather than offering the same experience to everyone, Kambô appears to meet each person where they are, making every ceremony a unique and deeply personal journey.

When administered by a trained practitioner, Kambô is generally safe. However, it’s important to consider contraindications, disclose any medical conditions or medications to ensure it’s right for you.

Contraindications and Safety

Kambo is not recommended for individuals taking certain medications or substances, or for those with specific conditions outlined in the list of contraindications. If you have any doubts or concerns, please reach out to me for clarification.

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Serious complications are rare but can occur if not administered properly.

Practical Considerations

The cost of a Kambo session can vary based on several factors, including the practitioner’s level of experience, the location, and whether the session is conducted in a group or private setting. For specific pricing, please contact me directly, and I’ll provide the details relevant to your situation.

Yes, I do offer group Kambo sessions. Group sessions provide a supportive environment where participants can share their experiences and energies, which can enhance the healing process. The collective energy of the group often creates a strong sense of community and connection, making the experience even more powerful.

While individual sessions offer a more personalized experience with one-on-one attention, group sessions allow you to benefit from the shared journey of others. Both formats are valuable, and the choice between them depends on your personal preferences and needs.

During the Session

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that you don’t mind getting soiled, as purging is a common part of the experience.

It’s generally advised to fast for 8-12 hours before the session, Only a small amount of water to hydrate  can be consumed a few hours prior to your session.

Bring water, a towel, comfortable clothes, and any personal items that help you feel at ease, like a blanket or cushion.

A session typically lasts 3hours, including preparation, the application of Kambo, and recovery time.

Every Kambô ceremony begins with a thorough consultation, where we’ll discuss your health history, intentions, and ensure Kambô is appropriate for you. This allows the treatment to be tailored to your individual needs while prioritising safety and your overall wellbeing.

During the ceremony, small superficial gates are created on the surface of the skin using a traditional technique. The Kambô secretion, mixed with a small amount of water, is then applied to these gates. The number and placement of the points are carefully chosen according to your individual treatment plan.

Once applied, Kambô is absorbed through the lymphatic system and begins to take effect within minutes. Most people experience a temporary increase in heart rate, warmth, facial flushing, swelling around the face, and sometimes nausea. These effects are a normal part of the Kambô process and are closely monitored throughout the ceremony.

For many people, the experience includes a purge, which may involve vomiting, sweating, shaking, crying, yawning, or occasionally diarrhoea. While not everyone experiences every form of purge, it is traditionally regarded as an important part of the process, allowing both physical and emotional release.

The active phase of the ceremony usually lasts around 20 to 40 minutes. Once the medicine has completed its work, the Kambô is removed from the gates, and most people begin to feel noticeably lighter and more comfortable. After a period of rest, you’ll gradually rehydrate, eat, and have time to integrate your experience before returning home.

Following the ceremony, the gates are typically treated with Sangre de Grado (Dragon’s Blood), a traditional Amazonian tree sap valued for supporting the skin’s natural healing process. Small marks remain where the gates were applied and gradually fade over time, although their appearance varies from person to person.

Every Kambô ceremony is unique. Some people experience primarily physical effects, while others describe emotional release, mental clarity, or a renewed sense of connection with themselves. My role throughout the process is to provide a safe, supportive, and compassionate space, guiding you through every stage of the experience with care and attention.

I typically use the local tap water unless there’s a risk of contamination. If you prefer to bring your own water, please bring 3 to 4 liters of regular filtered water. Avoid using distilled or alkaline water.

Emotional and Psychological Considerations

Many people describe Kambô as a deeply emotional as well as physical experience. During a ceremony, it is not uncommon for emotions, memories, or long-held patterns to surface, creating an opportunity to acknowledge, process, and release what no longer serves them.

While every person’s experience is unique, many participants report feeling lighter, calmer, and more emotionally balanced following a ceremony. For some, Kambô becomes a catalyst for greater self-awareness, helping them gain fresh perspective, reconnect with themselves, and move forward with renewed clarity and resilience.

Kambô is not about forcing emotional release, but about creating the conditions in which the body and mind can process experiences in their own way and in their own time. Every journey unfolds differently, and each ceremony is guided with compassion, presence, and respect for the individual’s process.

Feeling nervous before or during a Kambô ceremony is completely understandable, especially if it’s your first experience. Taking part in any new healing practice can bring uncertainty, and many people arrive with a mixture of curiosity, excitement, and apprehension.

One of my most important roles as a practitioner is to create a safe, calm, and supportive environment where you feel heard, respected, and well cared for. Throughout the ceremony, I will guide you every step of the way, closely observing how you’re responding and adjusting the treatment when appropriate. You’re always encouraged to share how you’re feeling, ask questions, and express any concerns.

For many people, once they surrender to the process and realise they are supported, the anxiety gradually gives way to a profound sense of relief, trust, and inner calm.

Integration might involve reflection, journaling, or discussing your experience with a trusted friend, counselor or therapist.

Cultural and Spiritual Context

Kambô has deep roots in Amazonian culture, where tribes like the Matses, Katukina, Yawanawa, and Marubo use it. Each tribe has unique traditions around its use, often applying Kambô to lift panema (negative energy) and to enhance hunting abilities by temporarily reducing human odor and boosting endurance. Traditionally, Kambô is used to treat ailments, cleanse and fortify the body and mind, increase stamina, and alleviate pain.

No, Kambo is not a hallucinogen. It does not produce altered states of consciousness like some other Amazonian medicines. However, many people experience insights or messages that inspire positive life changes.

Kambo is considered a sacred medicine by many indigenous cultures, used to connect with nature and the spirit world.

Legal and Ethical Considerations

Kambo is legal in many countries, but it’s essential to check the specific regulations in your area.

Ethical considerations include sustainable sourcing of the Kambo, respecting its cultural origins, and providing informed consent to clients.

Ethical and Sustainable Practices

I source my Kambo directly from the Matsés community in the Peruvian jungle. The secretion is collected ethically using traditional techniques.

The frog has been generous enough to come out of the jungle to meet us, but unfortunately, this has led to some individuals exploiting Kambo for monetary gain. Some collect Kambo in non-ethical, non-traditional ways, sometimes even using the wrong species of frog, which can be dangerous. As practitioners, it’s our responsibility to ensure that the Kambo we use is ethically sourced from communities that have a deep, traditional understanding of this medicine and do not harm the frog in any way.

I’ve witnessed significant issues arising from the commercialization of Kambo within the tribes. Often, individuals monopolize the trade, exploiting the families who collect the secretion. Many of these individuals falsely claim to be tribe members when they are not. As practitioners, it’s our responsibility to ensure that the Kambo we purchase is ethically sourced and that the monetary benefits support multiple families rather than just one individual.

As a certified IAKP Master Practitioner and Teacher with over 10 years of experience, I am committed to providing Kambô with the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and care.

I believe that learning never stops and continue to deepen my knowledge through ongoing education, clinical experience, and collaboration with the international Kambô community. Community and Support

Yes, I provide follow-up calls when there’s a need to monitor your progress or if there’s a potential risk situation. If you have questions about the Kambo process after our session, feel free to reach out to me by email.

For ongoing support, I recommend turning to close friends, integration circles, or therapists. If you need help finding support, please let me know, and I’ll do my best to assist you in your search.

You’re welcome to bring a friend or family member for support. However, if they are not participating in the Kambo session and there isn’t a medical reason for their presence, they will need to wait in a different area during the session. This helps create a calm and focused environment for your process.

If you have any questions or experience any concerns following your Kambô session, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. You’re welcome to send me an email or a detailed message describing what you’re experiencing, and I’ll do my best to respond as soon as possible.

Integration and aftercare are an important part of the Kambô journey, and I want you to feel supported throughout the process. Whether you have practical questions, need reassurance, or simply want to share your experience, I’m here to help guide you wherever I can.

To connect with others who have experienced Kambo, I recommend joining the IAKP private Facebook group, Kambo Tribe.

This group offers a supportive community where you can share your experiences, ask questions, and learn from both practitioners and others who have gone through the Kambo process. It’s a great space to build connections, gain insights, and feel part of a larger community dedicated to this powerful amazonian medicine.

Preparation and Aftercare

It’s recommended to fast for 8-12 hours before the session, stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol or recreational drugs. You can view my Kambô Client’s Guide

During a Kambô ceremony, it’s common to experience temporary effects such as warmth, facial flushing, nausea, vomiting, sweating, shaking, or emotional release. These responses are a normal part of the process and are closely monitored throughout the ceremony.

Every Kambô experience is unique. How you respond depends on many factors, including your individual physiology, your current state of health, and the medicine itself. Some ceremonies are primarily physical, while others can be deeply emotional or introspective.

Rather than arriving with fixed expectations, I encourage you to approach the ceremony with an open mind and a willingness to trust the process. Each experience unfolds in its own way, offering exactly the journey your body and mind are ready for in that moment.

Aftercare includes resting, staying hydrated, and eating light, nourishing foods. It’s also beneficial to reflect on your experience.

The number of sessions varies depending on individual goals and needs. Some may benefit from a single session, while others may seek a series of treatments.

According to the Matsés, “When things aren’t going right in your life, it’s the right time to take Kambo.” I advise clients to “ask the frog” or listen to their body and intuition to determine when it’s time for another session.
